Events of 2016-2017 Season

 

Tuesday 11th October 2016

 Annual General Meeting   followed by

"The ingenious gentleman Miguel de Cervantes" an illustrated talk by Brian Powell. This is the Society's tribute to one of Spain's greatest Writers in the year which marks the 400th anniversary of his death.

 

Tuesday 15th November 2016

Film "La lengua de las mariposas" (The butterfly's tongue) We mark another major anniversary - 80 years since the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This beautiful and powerful award-winning film (in Spanish, with English sub-titles), made in 1999, is set in Galicia in 1936.

A Drama by Jose Luis Cuerda about a boy who starts school, makes a friend and discovers.....

 

 Tuesday 6th December 2016

Easter Island an illustrated talk by Ruth and Mark Richmond , What is the Hispanic connection, I hear you ask?  It is a territory of Chile

(name in Spanish: Isla de Pascua).  (Not a lot of people know that.)  

 

Wednesday 18 January 2017

Vamos a jugar: a relaxed get-together in the King William IV (the Old Brewery Bar, at the back) on Hallgate in Cottingham.  Brian and Elizabeth will have a few not too taxing Spanish-related games and quizzes, and there will be the opportunity to brush up on your numbers in Spanish, by playing a little bingo.

Wednesday 22nd March 2017:  
Picasso's Guernica a Talk by Dr Rob Miles (University of Hull).  This marks 80 years since the bombing of the Basque village of Guernica on 26th April 1937 by Nazi and Italian warplanes at the request of Franco.  Picasso's mural, completed in June 1937, is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.

Altamira and Ice Age cave art in Spain an illustrated Talk by Dr Paul Bahn 
 
Tuesday 23 May 2017:

 Gary Hammond will give a talk about a permanent memorial for the eight International Brigaders from Hull who went to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War: what has happened so far; the connection with the Basque child refugees who came to Hull in 1937; and the link to Grimsby, concerning Tom Wintringham, a battalion commander.
